But, what is a cleaning routine? How does it work? You might ask yourself the exact same questions as I did before just getting startet on one. I learned that a routine helps me actually do my tasks and not procrastinate (as much). Anyways, a good routine needs time – don’t expect your first one to work like a charm, you’ll be disappointed.
First of all, you’ll need to make a list of every household task you do at least once a month. Then try to figure out, how often you do those things. For example, I dust and vacuum once a week and clean out the cat toilet completely every month, so the list looked like this (only longer):
- Dishes (1x/day)
- Vacuum (1x/week)
- Dust (1x/week)
- Cat toilet (1x/month)
When you’re done listing and planning, colour code the different times to make the next step easier. Because now, you’ll want to try and figure out on which weekday you’ll want to do what. Try to spread out the tasks evenly. My new list looked something like this:
- Monday: Dishes, Cat toilet + Dusting + Monthly 1 (e.g. Cat toilet)
- Tuesday: Dishes, Cat toilet + Vacuuming + Bi-weekly 1 (Laundry)
- Wednesday: Dishes, Cat Toilet + Bathroom cleaning + Bi-weekly 2
- Thursday: Dishes, Cat Toilet + Toilet cleaning + Bi-weekly 3
- Friday: Dishes, Cat Toilet + Taking out the trash + Monthly 2
- Saturday: Dishes, Cat Toilet + Tidying + Bi-weekly 4
- Sunday: Dishes, Cat Toilet
I managed to keep Sunday as an off day to have one day I have to do nothing but my daylies – sadly, this is something I can’t put off. It helps me relax, but if you feel you don’t need a break as much, feel free to spread everything out a bit more.
This is what my cleaning routine now looks like. I tried to colour code the Tasks and days and to make sure I’m able to check off the things I did (I use paperclips but small clothespins would work as well). As you can see, I’m not done yet and to recycle old materials, I used some old cardboard back of an old notepad.
Beware, having a routine is not what makes it work. There are a few things to consider when starting to clean by routine:
- Adjust the routine to accomodate your schedule
- Make sure your cleaning supplies are easily accessible and well-sorted
- Tidy as you go – always!
- If necessary, split your routine up into mornings and evenings
- Try to only put stuff on the list you actually need and want to do – I for one don’t see the reason in making my bed at all, so it’s not on the list.
- You can always opt for a digital planner – it’s just that I personally prefer hand-written or printed out lists over digital lists. This might be becaus it’s way too easy for me to ignore an app somewhere in a folder on my phone.
